What a tune-up covers

The biggest efficiency factor is coil cleanliness. Condenser coils outdoors collect dust, pollen, and debris; evaporator coils indoors collect a film that insulates them from the air they’re meant to cool. We clean both. We check refrigerant pressures (EPA Section 608 Universal certification is legally required for this), test the run capacitor and contactor — the most common summer failure points — inspect electrical connections, clear and flush the condensate drain line, check the filter and blower, and measure the temperature split across the coil to confirm the system is actually cooling to spec.

Why the capacitor matters most

If there’s one part that strands LA homeowners every July, it’s the run capacitor. It weakens gradually, then fails in extreme heat. A capacitor test during a tune-up costs nothing extra and a replacement is inexpensive — far cheaper than an emergency call during a heat wave, or the compressor damage a failing capacitor can cause.

When the San Fernando Valley runs 100°F+ for days at a stretch — a normal July pattern in Sherman Oaks, Encino, and Tarzana — condensers barely cycle off. Sustained high head pressure exposes every weakness at once: dirty coils shed heat poorly, marginal capacitors drift out of spec, and run times stretch into the evening. If your system skipped a spring tune-up, mid-summer service is still worth doing. Cleaning the condenser and testing the capacitor in July protects you through August and September, which are frequently hotter than July in LA.

A low refrigerant charge is not normal wear — refrigerant doesn’t get “used up.” Low charge means a leak. We check pressures and, if they’re low, locate the leak and explain your options. Topping off a leaking system is wasteful and violates EPA best practice, so we don’t do it blindly.
