Is an aging mini-split worth repairing, or should I replace the system?
It usually comes down to the fault. A dirty blower wheel, clogged drain, failed indoor fan, or control board is worth fixing on almost any age of head. A compressor or a refrigerant leak in the line set on an aging system tilts toward replacement, which we coordinate. We’ll show you the math first.
How Epic Star services ductless mini-splits in Los Angeles
Ductless mini-splits have become the go-to for LA additions, converted garages, ADUs, and homes without ductwork. They’re efficient and quiet — until the indoor head clogs with grime and starts smelling musty, the drain backs up and drips down the wall, or an error code shuts the system down. Most of what owners call “a broken mini-split” is actually a maintenance problem we can resolve in one visit.
The deep clean that actually matters
A mini-split’s basic filter catches lint, but the blower wheel and evaporator coil behind it collect a film of grime and, in humid coastal homes, mold. That’s the real source of weak airflow and the musty smell people describe. A proper deep clean means removing the blower wheel and coil cover and cleaning the surfaces a filter swap never touches. This is the single most valuable service for an aging mini-split, and the difference in airflow and smell afterward is dramatic.
Leaks, drains, and condensate pumps
The second most common call is water running down the wall below the indoor unit. That’s a clogged condensate drain line, an improperly sloped line, or — on high-mounted heads that drain uphill — a failed condensate pump. We clear the line, verify the slope, and test or replace the pump.
Error codes and no-cool faults
Mini-splits communicate faults through blinking lights or display codes that vary by brand. We read and interpret them — sensor faults, indoor-outdoor communication errors, pressure faults — and diagnose the underlying cause. No-cool and no-heat problems usually trace to low refrigerant (a line-set leak), a failed outdoor fan motor or compressor, or a reversing-valve fault in heat-pump mode.
Refrigerant handled correctly
We are EPA Section 608 Universal certified. We check pressures, locate leaks, and don’t just top off a leaking sealed system, which only delays the real fix.

Frequently asked questions
How much does mini-split service cost in Los Angeles?
A mini-split deep cleaning and service typically runs $150–$400. A single-zone indoor-head deep clean (blower wheel and coil) is usually $180–$280. Multi-zone systems with several heads cost more because each indoor unit is cleaned separately. Repairs like a failed fan motor or control board are quoted after diagnosis. Our $85 service call is credited toward the work when it proceeds.
Why does my mini-split smell musty?
Musty odor is the most common mini-split complaint, and it's almost always mold and grime on the blower wheel and evaporator coil inside the indoor head — areas the basic filter doesn't protect. LA's coastal humidity makes it worse. A proper deep clean removes the blower wheel and coil cover and cleans the surfaces the smell comes from. Just changing the filter won't fix it.
How often should a mini-split be cleaned?
We recommend a professional deep clean every 1–2 years for most homes, and annually for coastal homes (Venice, Marina del Rey, Santa Monica) or homes with pets. Filters should be rinsed by the owner every 4–6 weeks. Regular cleaning keeps airflow strong, prevents mold odor, and protects efficiency.
Do you handle refrigerant and leaks on mini-splits?
Yes. We are EPA Section 608 Universal certified, required by law for refrigerant work. We check system pressures and, if the charge is low, locate the leak in the line set or connections. Low refrigerant always means a leak — we diagnose it rather than just adding refrigerant to a system that will lose it again.
Do you install new mini-split systems?
Yes — we handle mini-split installations as well as service and repair. Call us with your project details and we'll give you a quote.
Which mini-split brands do you service?
All major ductless brands: Mitsubishi (Mr. Slim, M-Series), Daikin, Fujitsu, LG, Samsung, Senville, Pioneer, Gree, and Carrier/Toshiba units. The core service — coil and blower cleaning, drain clearing, refrigerant check, error-code diagnosis — is similar across brands; the differences are in part sourcing and code interpretation.
