New light bulbs for a Sub-Zero refrigerator in Venice
A small job in Venice, September 2026: what the photo shows, which bulbs Sub-Zero lists for its refrigerators, and what it means when a new bulb stays dark.
In this guide
Changing a refrigerator light bulb is a small job, and on a Sub-Zero the part to get right is the bulb itself. In September 2026, we replaced the light bulbs in a Sub-Zero refrigerator in Venice.
What the photo shows
In the photo at the top of this page, two frosted, pear-shaped bulbs with screw bases are in my glove. Above them, the lights in the refrigerator’s light bar are on. The bulbs glowing in the sockets are LED bulbs of the corn-cob type, covered in rows of tiny LEDs.
Between the sockets, a small label reads 120 VAC, 40 WATT MAX.
Which bulb does a Sub-Zero refrigerator take?
It depends on the model. Sub-Zero’s bulb page for its 500 and 600 Series refrigerators recommends 40-watt bulbs and doesn’t recommend anything over 40 watts. A lower-watt bulb won’t harm the unit, Sub-Zero adds, though the light may look noticeably different. The label on this refrigerator’s light housing sets the same ceiling.
A maximum-wattage label like that one is a heat limit. An incandescent bulb turns most of the power it uses into heat, and a socket and its cover are rated for only so much of it. Inside a refrigerator, that heat also lands in the food compartment whenever the light is on.
Shape and base vary by model. On that chart, models such as the 650 and 690 take a regular A15 appliance bulb with a medium screw base. Models such as the 532 and 561 take a long, narrow T6.5 bulb with a smaller intermediate base. Sub-Zero also warns that the blue-tinted bulbs from its Classic (formerly Built-In) models won’t work in 500 or 600 Series units. Other Sub-Zero series have their own bulb pages, so look up your model number before you buy.
Can you use LED bulbs in a Sub-Zero?
For its 500, 600 and 700 Series, Sub-Zero says LED bulbs may be used as replacements if you want them, though it doesn’t sell LED bulbs for those units. Its Classic (BI) and IC-27 units can use an LED bulb that Sub-Zero does sell. Whatever you buy, match the base and make sure the bulb fits under the light cover.
Changing a bulb safely
Turn the refrigerator off and switch off its breaker, so the socket is dead. A bulb that has been on can be hot, so let it cool before you touch it. Gloves help if one breaks.
On many Sub-Zero units the bulbs sit behind a light cover, called a diffuser, and putting it back right matters. For the overhead lights on its 600 Series, Sub-Zero’s instructions have you release two clips and slide the diffuser back, and the bulbs twist out counterclockwise. Sub-Zero warns that a diffuser that isn’t locked back in place can drop, damaging the diffuser and the food and injuring someone.
What if a new bulb stays dark?
Then the problem probably isn’t the bulb. On a refrigerator, the door usually works a small light switch as it opens and closes. A failed switch, a bad socket or a wiring fault can keep a good bulb dark. Some Sub-Zero models have no bulbs to change at all. On the same LED page, Sub-Zero notes that its PRO Series refrigeration doesn’t use bulbs for overhead lighting, so on those units a dark light calls for a different repair.
A dark control panel can trace back to the bulbs too. Sub-Zero says the displays on its 600 and 700 Series, IC-27 and Classic (BI) units are backlit by the interior light bulbs. If new bulbs don’t bring the lights back, turn the power off and call.

FAQ
What light bulb does a Sub-Zero refrigerator use?
It depends on the series and the model. For its 500 and 600 Series refrigerators, Sub-Zero recommends 40-watt bulbs and doesn't recommend anything over 40 watts. Its chart for those series lists a regular A15 appliance bulb with a medium screw base for models such as the 650 and 690, and a long, narrow T6.5 bulb with a smaller intermediate base for models such as the 532 and 561. Other series have their own bulb pages, so look up your model number before you buy.
Can I put LED bulbs in my Sub-Zero?
Sub-Zero says LED bulbs may be used as replacements in its 500, 600 and 700 Series units, though it doesn't sell LED bulbs for them. Its Classic (BI) and IC-27 units can use an LED bulb that Sub-Zero does sell. The bulbs lit in the sockets in our Venice photo are LED bulbs.
I changed the bulb and the light is still out. What now?
Then the bulb probably wasn't the problem. A failed light switch, a bad socket or a wiring fault can keep a good bulb dark. Turn the power off and leave the rest to a technician.
Do I need to turn off my Sub-Zero to change a bulb?
Yes. Turn the refrigerator off and switch off its breaker so the socket is dead, and let a bulb that has been on cool down before you touch it.
Do you service Sub-Zero refrigerators in Venice?
Yes, in Venice and across the Westside. The $85 service call is credited toward the repair if you go ahead, and repairs carry a 30-day labor and 90-day parts warranty.
